Nikos Kazantzakis Museum pays tribute to the important intellectual, author, thinker, philosopher, politician and traveler Nikos Kazantzakis.
The Museum is made up of a cluster of buildings in the central square of the historical village of Varvari, now known as Myrtia.
The Museum holds manuscripts and notes by the author; samples of his correspondence with major thinkers, politicians and authors of his time; first editions of his works in Greek and other languages; rare photographic material; souvenirs from his travels; personal effects; models, costumes and other material from theatre productions of his works in Greece and abroad; portraits and sculptures of the author; dozens of foreign-language editions of his works from all over the world, all a legacy that brings alive the memory of Nikos Kazantzakis and promotes his work and personality.
The Nikos Kazantzakis Museum has quite literally become a site of worldwide intellectual pilgrimage. Every day, visitors arrive from all four corners of the globe, bearing witness to the lasting relevancy of the word expressed by the great Cretan, universal author and thinker.
The museum is in the main village square in Myrtia (Varvari), 15 kilometers south of Heraklion, in the hinterland of the former district of Pediada, now in the boundaries of the Archanon-Asterousion Municipality.

Getting to the museum:
Visitors with own transport have a choice of three routes to Myrtia:
The shortest route is to take the National Road heading east out of Heraklion to Agios Nikolaos. At the Nea Alikarnassos interchange (if coming from the east, 1km after the exit for Heraklion International Airport), take the south exit next to Heraklion industrial zone and follow the new road to Viannos. Turn left at the traffic lights marking the junction for Skalani, and at the village entrance turn right at the signpost for the museum. This road leads straight to the village of Myrtia, 4km further on.
The second route leads out of Heraklion on the road to Knossos, which is 5km outside the city. Drive 2km further on and then turn left for Skalani. At the entrance to the village, turn right for Myrtia at the signpost.
For the third route, follow the road out of Heraklion to Knossos, which is 5km outside the city. Heading straight on further south into the hinterland of Heraklion prefecture, you will drive through the villages of Kounavoi and Peza, and past the Peza Union buildings. Turn left for Agies Paraskies, go through the village and then turn left again. A short way on you will come to Myrtia. Though this is a longer route, the advantage lies in the fact that you are led via Knossos into the picturesque countryside of Pediada, and through the main villages in the Archanon-Asterousion Municipality.
